American artificial intelligence (AI) company OpenAI has officially launched its new flagship model – GPT-4o during the OpenAI spring event 2024. The ‘o’ in GPT-4 stands for omni. The flagship model will be rolled out iteratively over the next few weeks – meaning a faster model which will be free for all ChatGPT users. And for paid users, it will continue to have up to 5X capacity limit of free users. The announcement was made on Monday by OpenAI’s CTO Muri Murati during a keynote presentation. Apart from this, the company is also releasing a desktop version of ChatGPT and a refreshed UI. Muri Murati said GPT-4o provides ‘GPT-4-level‘ intelligence but is much faster. It improves capabilities across text, vision and audio. She further said that the company has been focused on improving the intelligence of its models for the past couple of years. It’s the first time OpenAI has gone up a step ahead – when it comes to ease of use, added Murati.

GPT-4o also enhances ChatGPT’s vision competency by quickly answering questions by simply sharing a screenshot or an image. The new model will also be available through GPT API enabling developers to start building AI apps and deploying them at a scale. Moreover, OpenAI’s new GPT-4o will be more multilingual with improved performance in 50 languages. It is 2 times faster, 50 per cent cheaper and 5 times higher rate limits compared to GPT-4 Turbo.
