Remember all that tariff hubbub? While the conversation may have quieted since Trump’s self-declared “Liberation Day” on April 2, 2025 — when he launched a trade war by way of threatening “reciprocal” tariffs on virtually all imports — the August 1 deadline is just a day away.
After tomorrow, countries will be required to strike deals or face even steeper tariffs. That means both retailers and manufacturers are expecting to raise prices on everyday essentials, tech products, cars and more to offset the increased production costs. For the record, none of America’s top three trading partners — China, Mexico and Canada — have struck a deal.
So what does this mean for you, the American consumer? Expect to pay more on those household essentials.
If you’re already feeling the pinch from inflation, it might be smart to stock up before prices jump even higher.
While the full impact of these tariffs is yet to be seen, we do know that household staples like paper towels, cleaning supplies, packaged goods and more are expected to be affected. If you’re planning to stock up ahead of Trump’s tariff deadline, we’ve rounded up some smart buys below.

Tide laundry detergent
P&G announced it’s increasing prices on 25% of its products, and we have a hunch that includes one of its biggest labels: Tide products. A spokesperson said that while company manufactures roughly 90% of its products domestically, it still imports raw ingredients and packaging materials from China.
The smart buy here is purchasing liquid detergent, which can clean more laundry loads than pods, though we do understand the grab-and-drop convenience that pods offer on a hectic day. Clorox disinfecting wipes
During a May 5 earnings call, Clorox CFO Luc Bellet said the company would have to change its supply chain sources to offset an estimated $100 million tariff hit to its business. While the company hasn’t explicitly stated that it’ll increase its prices, we have a hunch its cleaning products will be affected by the latest tariff increases due to their chemicals and packaging materials.
